History
The story of WKAQ 580
WKAQ 580 (580 AM) is a commercial radio station in San Juan, Puerto Rico, broadcasting a Spanish language talk format. Its programming is repeated on WUKQ (1420 AM) in Ponce and WYEL (600 AM) in Mayagüez. Currently owned by WAPA Media Group, it serves as Puerto Rico's primary entry point station for the Emergency Alert System.
WKAQ was the first radio station in Puerto Rico. According to Ernesto Vigoreaux, in the early days of music on the island, musicians would record their music at the WKAQ station. For many years the station was owned by Angel Ramos, owner of the El Mundo newspaper and eventual namesake of WKAQ-TV, branded as Telemundo. El Mundo operated until 1986, when labor strikes and acts of terrorism ended its operation.
On May 9, 2022, Hemisphere Media Group, owner of WAPA-TV, announced it would purchase WKAQ, WKAQ-FM, WUKQ, WUKQ-FM and WYEL from Univision Radio, marking Hemisphere's entry into the radio business. During WAPA's 2023 upfront presentation, management alluded that talent from the channel would join the radio stations in the future, and vice versa. On September 1, 2023, the deal was finalized and the media properties were spun off into a subsidiary called WAPA Media, including WAPA-TV, WAPA Deportes, WAPA América, and the two radio stations.
Notable current on-air staff include Jay Fonseca, Rubén Sánchez, Carlos Díaz Olivo, Luis Pabón Roca, and José Efraín Hernández.
