W RADIO 96.9 (CDMX)

W Radio is heard today in Mexico City on 96.9 FM and 900 AM, simulcasting a news/talk format. XEW is the flagship for other W Radio stations around Mexico that carry some or all of its programs, featuring frequent news segments, talk and sports shows, plus music during overnights and weekends.

XEW-AM began regular broadcasts at 20:00 CST on September 18, 1930, from a room at the Olympia Cinema in Mexico City, powered at just 5,000 watts. Power rose to 50,000 watts by 1934, and with a new transmitter it reached 250 kW by 1935, remaining there for more than 80 years; for much of its history it was the most powerful AM station in North America. On February 10, 2016, it was approved to move its transmitter to La Magdalena Atlicpac in La Paz, with power reduced to 100,000 watts. It was the first Mexico City station in Emilio Azcarraga Vidaurreta's Chain of the Americas, forerunner to Televisa, which owned XEW-AM until selling its radio unit in 2020.

The FM frequency, 96.9, received its concession on April 28, 1962, but did not launch until the 1970s, carrying a disco format by the end of that decade. By 1981 it changed to "Rock Stereo," and on September 9, 1985, it was renamed "WFM" with an English rock and pop format, directly competing with Rock 101. Its DJs included Alejandro González Iñárritu, Martha Debayle and Charo Fernández. In 1999 it became "W Radical" with electronic music and eurodance, directed by former Rock 101 head Luis Gerardo Salas; by 2001 it returned to WFM with the slogan "Frecuencia Adictiva." In late 2002, after Televisa Radio and PRISA joined forces, AM and FM began simulcasting the same programming, and XEW-FM became a news and talk outlet.
