The story of VIOLETA RADIO 106.1 (CDMX)

Violeta Radio was a community radio station on 106.1 FM in Mexico City that described itself as a "feminist" station. Its concession was held by Alianza por el Derecho Humano de las Mujeres a Comunicar, A.C., a civil association formed by several women's organizations and activists.

The station traces its origins to 2016, when the IFT reduced mandatory FM station spacing from 800 to 400 kHz, which, together with the 2014 designation of 106-108 MHz as a reserved band for community and indigenous stations, opened the door for two new stations in Mexico City. The concessionaire was formed by two civil associations—Salud Integral para la Mujer (SIPAM) and Comunicación e Información de la Mujer (CIMAC)—along with UNAM researcher Aimée Vega Montiel, who filed an application in May 2016. On August 23, 2017, the IFT's commissioners unanimously awarded the concession for Mexico City's first licensed community radio station.

On February 27, 2018, Violeta Radio was presented at the Memory and Tolerance Museum, where an agreement with Radio Educación to mount its antenna on the same tower was announced. After delays, XHCDMX-FM began testing on March 14, 2019, and started broadcasting that March. Its programming was designed as a "counterweight to gender stereotypes," with news and programs from a gender perspective covering human and reproductive rights, labor rights, and the right to education.

On October 14, 2024, the concession was surrendered to the IFT amid a dispute between members of the association. The surrender was made by SIPAM representative María Eugenia Chávez Fonseca, who said "the right thing to do was to take away the apple of discord"; CIMAC called the decision "unilateral." Violeta Radio continues online only.
