The story of LOS40 88.5 (Monterrey)
LOS40 88.5 (XHWAG-FM) is a radio station on 88.5 FM in Monterrey, Nuevo León, owned by Radiópolis and carrying its Los 40 format. Its roots go back to XEWA-AM, licensed in May 1961 to bring XEW-AM 900 Mexico City service to Monterrey with an improved nighttime signal, and for decades it simulcast its San Luis Potosí sister station. On March 16, 1988, it broke away with a grupera format, Súper Estelar WA, programmed by Multimedios Estrellas de Oro and one of Mexico's pioneering grupera stations; after five years the format moved to Multimedios FM stations. The station then flipped to Ke Buena under Televisa operation until 1998, when it began repeating XEW again as Cadena W Azul y Plata and later W Radio; in 2003 Radiorama took over management for Televisa Radio. In July 2009 the Monterrey and San Luis Potosí stations split for the first time, with Monterrey offering a Nuevo León-specific version of W Radio, and from May 2012 it carried the news and talk programming of Dominio Radio for several months before returning to W Radio. On September 11, 2014, it flipped to Los 40 Principales. As part of FM migration, it began broadcasting on FM on June 2, 2018, becoming XHWAG-FM on 88.5 MHz, and the AM transmitter was shut down on April 25, 2020, after a year of simulcasting.
