The story of HCJB La Voz de los Andes 89.3 FM

HCJB, "The Voice of the Andes", today airs Spanish-language missionary programming from Quito on FM 89.3 in Pichincha, with relay transmitters in Manabí (92.5), Tungurahua and Cotopaxi (96.1) and Esmeraldas (98.3), plus AM at 690 kHz and a shortwave signal on 6.05 MHz carrying Spanish and indigenous language programs.

The station was founded in 1931 by US missionaries Clarence W. Jones, Reuben Larson and D. Stuart Clark. Jones, a musician and Moody Bible Institute graduate, conceived the idea while working with evangelist Paul Rader's radio ministry in Chicago. After a 1928 trip through Venezuela, Colombia, Panama and Cuba failed to secure permits, missionaries from Ecuador encouraged him to choose that country. On August 15, 1930, Ecuador's Congress granted Jones a 25-year contract, and he incorporated the World Radio Missionary Fellowship, Inc. on March 9, 1931. The call letters HCJB stand for "Hoy Cristo Jesús Bendice". Its first broadcast came on Christmas Day 1931, in English and Spanish, from a studio in the Joneses' living room using a 200-watt transmitter.

Live programs in Russian, Swedish and Quichua were added in 1941, and by 1944 the station aired programming in 14 languages. It acquired land near Pifo for transmission facilities in 1951 and was licensed for Ecuador's first TV station in 1961. A new 100 kW transmitter, the HC-100, went into operation at Pifo in 1990.

With the opening of the new Quito airport, the Ecuadorian government demanded the removal of HCJB's shortwave transmitter station, and the mission chose to abandon shortwave from Ecuador: the extensive worldwide transmissions ended on September 30, 2009. The US mission, renamed Reach Beyond in 2014, owns and operates the station today and focuses on "radio planting", assisting local Christian ministries. HCJB continues a small shortwave service from Mt. Pichincha on 6050 kHz, using a 1 kW solid-state transmitter installed in 2017.
