History
The story of EL HERALDO RADIO 98.5 (CDMX)
XHDL-FM, 98.5 FM, is a news/talk station in Mexico City known as El Heraldo Radio, owned by El Heraldo de México. Its transmitter sits atop Cerro del Chiquihuite, and it broadcasts in HD.
98.5 FM began as XELA-FM in 1962, owned by Radio Metropolitana, S.A., concessionaire of XELA-AM 830. Until 1984 it simulcast the AM station; after breaking away it became "Stereo Classics", playing English-language music of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. In 1989 it shifted to more contemporary English music as "Dial FM" and changed its callsign to XHDL-FM.
On July 20, 1992, it became "Radioactivo 98.5" with a rock and hip hop format, known for its provocative slogans. International artists such as Metallica, Rammstein, The Mars Volta, Snoop Dogg and the Red Hot Chili Peppers visited the station. From 1992 to 2000 it was operated by MVS Radio, then became part of Imagen Telecomunicaciones. The station closed on April 2, 2004, prompting minor protests outside the studios.
In April 2004 it flipped to talk as "Reporte 98.5", offering news, talk and traffic reports for the Mexico City area. In 2011 it became one of the first stations in Mexico City to broadcast in HD Radio. In January 2017 it went full-time with the RMX format.
On June 16, 2019, Grupo Imagen and Grupo Andrade, owners of the El Heraldo de México newspaper, announced the sale of XHDL-FM. RMX signed off on June 21, and El Heraldo Radio began operating on June 22, 2019, with newscasts and informative programs. The IFT approved the concession transfer on August 28, 2019. News hosts include Sergio Sarmiento, Guadalupe Juárez, Jesús Martín Mendoza and Salvador García Soto.
