The story of 107.3 La Z (CDMX)
La Z 107.3 (XEQR-FM) is a radio station in Mexico City broadcasting on 107.3 FM with a Regional Mexican format. It is owned by Grupo Radio Centro and broadcasts in HD, with La Z on HD1 and Radio Centro XEQR-AM on HD2. Its transmitter is located atop a tower at the La Mesa/Villa Alpina site on the western outskirts of Mexico City. From 1999 to 2017, it was Mexico's top-rated radio station.
XEQR took to the air in 1974, more than 10 years after receiving its concession on December 3, 1963, as "Radio Universal" with a format of English-language music from the 1950s and 1960s. In 1991, it became "Universal Stereo 107.3 FM" and picked up the long-running "El Club de los Beatles" program from XERC-AM, which had dropped it when that station left the Radio Éxitos format.
On December 7, 1998, XEQR and XHFO-FM swapped formats: XEQR adopted the Regional Mexican "La Z" format, which had begun on XHFO in 1993, while Universal Stereo moved to XHFO.
