History
The story of 104.9 Exa FM (CDMX)
EXA FM 104.9 (XHEXA-FM) is a Contemporary Hit Radio station in Mexico City. It is owned by MVS Radio and serves as the flagship of the Exa FM format. Its transmitter sits atop Cerro del Chiquihuite.
The station signed on in 1974 as XHBST-FM, owned by the same Stereorey consortium that brought FM to major Mexican cities with stations such as XHV-FM 102.5 in Mexico City and XHSRO-FM in Monterrey. It carried the "Stereo Best" format, which was very similar. Not long after, it switched to "FM Globo", a name it kept while airing varying formats including romantic music, Spanish pop, and contemporary music.
The station changed its callsign to XHMRD-FM on October 8, 1991, and on January 1, 2000, it became "Exa FM" with a Top 40 CHR format, the name alluding to blocks of six consecutive songs. Its callsign was later changed to XHEXA-FM to match its new name; that callsign had been briefly used by an MVS Radio station in Hermosillo, Sonora, which returned to XHBH-FM when the XHEXA calls moved to Mexico City.
