The story of 102.5 MVS (CDMX)
MVS 102.5 (XHMVS-FM) is a news-talk station in Mexico City, broadcasting on 102.5 FM from a tower on Cerro del Chiquihuite. Owned by MVS Radio, it currently operates as MVS Noticias, offering a wide range of news and talk programs plus contemporary English-language music in off-hours, a remnant of earlier formats.
In 1964, a concession was awarded to Ruben Marin y Kall for a new station on 102.5 FM under the callsign XHV-FM. It took to the air on August 15, 1967, and the next year was sold to Joaquín Vargas Gómez, founder of MVS, who increased its power from 1 to 54 kW. At the time, it was an English-language music outlet known as "Stereorey", a name still evident in the concessionaire for almost all of MVS's owned-and-operated stations in Mexico. Stereorey became a nationwide network of stations, mostly owned by MVS.
On October 8, 1991, as the network's flagship, the station was renamed XHMVS-FM and its power increased to 80 kW. On August 5, 2002, Stereorey gave way nationwide to Best FM, with a newer music mix. On March 15, 2004, the station adopted its first news-based format, MVS 102.5, broadcasting the newscasts of Grupo Monitor, which had a partnership with MVS at the time. After a two-year stint with the national "La Mejor" grupera format from December 1, 2006 to November 30, 2008, XHMVS-FM returned to news on January 5, 2009. In 2015, the Stereorey format was relaunched as a commercial-free online stream.
